SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE REVIEWS

There’s a lot of bad movies out right now. Most of them were written during the writer’s strike and are the products of underdeveloped scripts. But I’ve been watching ‘em all anyways, ‘cause I’m a sucker for a summer blockbuster. Here are my quick reviews:

Star Trek: 9 out of 10
Damn Good.  Like… Indiana Jones original trilogy good.  Or seeing the first dinosaur in Jurassic Park good.   I saw it twice.

UP: 9 out of 10
Heart warming. Fun. Yes.  Everyone in the movie theatre cried (except for me, cough).

TRANSFORMERS 2: 7 out of 10
Ok.  Non-existent plot.  Cheesy writing. Horrible acting.  The list goes on and on. But…  if you tune it all out.  And just relax. The film’s fun. 2.5 hours of explosions and giant robots.  Megan Fox is hot.

EDIT (7-08-09): However…  if you feel like analyzing the egregiously gaping holes in Transformer 2’s completely non-sensical story…  CLICK HERE. (funny as hell)

The Hangover: 8 out of 10
Highest grossing R-Rated comedy of all time. hahah. Nice job fellas! Great writing.  Good acting. Smart pacing.  No flaws. Very solid work over all.  I could be biased because I love Vegas. lol

The Hurt Locker: 9 out of 10
Great photo-journalistic cinematography.  The art direction is really strong too. Beautiful burnt out war torn raw textures and monochromatic color schemes permiate the imagery.  Simple aesthetics. Well written, straight forward story.   Solid acting.  And tons of adrenaline.   From the director of “Speed”.  How could you go wrong?  That movie made Quentin Tarantino’s latest top 20!

Terminator: Salvation: 1 out of 10
Why is the very first attempt at a “Prototype Terminator” so perfect that it fools everyone that it is a human being (even itself…)?   A rebel soldier even falls in love with it.  Woops. Spoiler. Oh well.  This movie sucks.

Knowing: 5 out of 10
The plot is a little far fetched.  But I liked the tone of the art direction and the all out disaster visuals were compelling too.

Go Go 70s: 7 out of 10
Korea in the 70s!  Plus supporting the Asian American Film Festival in NYC.  Win.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: 6.5 out of 10
Just, ok.  Special effects are sub-par. And they literally mutilated Dead Pool.  But Wolverine is a great character.  And it’s fun to see a movie dedicated to him.

Public Enemies: 8.5 out of 10
The raw video look mixed with the actual locations of the John Dillinger bank robberies gave this period piece a great feeling of immediacy.  Depp was amazing as usual. And I usually like Bale’s performances, but I don’t think he’s been doing a good job lately. In this film he was one-note and unengaging, just like he was in Terminator and Batman.

District 9: 8.5 out of 10
Great movie. Not perfect. But has so much character and personality.  I love the mixed media cinematography and the fact that main character is a spineless asshole.  Good solid action.  Amazing  special fx.  Can’t wait to see what this director does next.  District 10?

.

NEXT MOVIES TO WATCH…

Drag me to Hell
and…  G.I. Joe !

EDIT: 08-15-2009

Nevermind. I’m waiting for G.I. Joe to hit netflix.  It looks horrible.
